transportation for college students

This post authored by Jean, from zipcode 11419

My child has to take the LIRR and 2 buses to get to college and yet there is not discount tickets for college students who pay tuition, but there is discount tickets for middle and high school students. This is grossly unfair, especially since college students struggle with their parents to pay tuition costs. Can we get a discount too?

Dear Jean,

Your idea of giving an MTA discount to college students, like your daughter, is very interesting. The MTA already gives full fare and discounted fare MetroCards to students K-12. It stands to reason that college students, who are facing financial hardship and an economic crisis, should also receive a full or discounted fare card. Your idea would help bring college students, including ones who are new to the city, into the subway and onto the buses, helping to make mass transit the natural way to travel in their adulthood. It would also help sustain our green city, enable college students to explore our city and engage in local tourism, boosting our economy.

As Public Advocate I would study your proposal, and the costs that would be associated with it. Perhaps with increased college student ridership your plan could pay for itself.

Thank you for sharing your idea. I look forward to the opportunity to be your advocate for your issue.

Mark
