Affordable Housing

This post authored by Harriet, from zipcode 11361

Here, in New York City, the middle classed is being priced right out of New York City. Neighborhoods are being ruined by overbuilding luxury housing.
That makes the price of home ownership and rents go sky high.
What is the middle class to do? Young people can no longer afford to buy a home in New York City.
Can you do something to help this?
Sincerely,
Harriet J. Brown

Dear Harriet,

Without a strong middle class, New York will lack the innovation, diversity and creativity that make it the greatest City in the world.

Here is what I will do to ensure the middle class can afford to live here:

• I will fight to expand the areas covered by 421-a tax-exemption program to cover more areas outside of Manhattan, spurring the development of affordable housing throughout the five boroughs.

• I will work with City, State and local stakeholders to preserve our current crop of affordable housing units.

• I will expose and work to rectify loopholes that allow owners to permanently raise rents on regulated apartments by doing needless improvements and phony demolitions.

• I will root out corruption in the distribution of affordable housing stock to make sure that those who are in need have access to this vital program.

Thank you for your question. I look forward to being your advocate for making New York an affordable place to live for people of all incomes.

Mark
